Both volumes have red decorative borders around the written pages and tops of paper edges are gilt. Both volumes with b/w reproductions of illustrations in photogravure, each with captioned tissue guard. Both volumes with beveled edges and decorative end papers.

Vol. 1. Cracking after the first few pages of inner front cover. Binding with foxing on spine and back cover. Foxing on frontispiece, affecting part of the image. Foxing around edges of plates, not affecting images. Binding and interior both in very good condition overall. Vol. 2. Binding with foxing on spine and back cover. Frontispiece with foxing to edges, not affecting image. Foxing on edges of plates, not affecting images. Very slight water staining to end pages.
