The work is considered to be the most influential publication of the Irish-born research chemist. It was written in the late 1850s after Muspratt and his brother had become partners in their father's chemicals manufacturing business. This edition distinguishes itself from the 1870s edition by the inclusion of engravings of 29 portraits of important 18th and 19th century chemists.
