Musings in the Laboratory, or a Glance at the Consummation of Chemical Science [INSCRIBED]

New York: James D. Torrey, 1849. First edition. Softcover. To unidentified Professor from the author on title page. Octavo. 108pp. Original brown wraps with black lettering and ruling on cover. "It has frequently occurred to the author of the following pages, and during a long series of years, that when engaged in proper scientific investigations, a remote relation–a profound moral bearing of the then palpable facts would obtrude upon his attention, and sometimes defeat his immediate pursuit. These interruptions, however unwelcome at first, presently obtained an interest in his understanding, and their results have eventually worked together into systematic order." (Introduction). Keath writes about various such experiences working with electricity, magnetism, light, heat, various gases, carbon, silicon and other chemical compounds. From the conclusion: "Such as we have now briefly described is the final-cause or mission of chemistry, and such the rationale of apparent being. To have real value even science must be sent–must have impulse in origin and deep significance in result." Cover with medium chips at top right, smaller at left and right corner at bottom. Back cover missing. Light creasing at corners of block. Two minor inked corrections on page 11. Some light sporadic foxing, more pronounced at last few pages. Wraps in fair, interior in overall good+ condition. fair to g+. Item #44294
