上海博物館藏畫 Shanghai bo wu guan cang hua (Shanghai Museum Painting Collections)
上海 (Shanghai): 上海博物館 (Shanghai bo wu guan), 1959. Limited first edition. Hardcover. Elephant Folio. 21.5 x16". Decorative silk clamshell box, with a white paper label on the front. Dark blue velvet boards with debossed gilt-stamped lettering on the front cover. Decorative endpapers. The work was published by Shanghai Museum to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic Of China, and contains 100 mounted plates reproducing paintings from the museum's collection. The works are reproduced photographically in color, with some printed on silk, represent the various periods throughout Chinese history from the Song dynasty through the modern era. It seems that this copy of the book was given as a gift and not printed for sale, as there is no publication page.
Each painting is captioned in Chinese on the opposite page, containing information about the title, artist, artists bio, period, artistic medium, and/or style. English captions have been handwritten in black ink underneath each work after the fact. Some of the paintings are reproduced on glossy paper and some on silk. The artists whose works are contained in the book include The Four Masters of the Yuan, Four Masters of the Ming, Four Monks of the Late Ming (Bada Shanren, Shih-T'ao, Shih Chi and Chien-Chiang), Six Masters of the Qing Dynasty, the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, Xu Beihong, and Qi Baishi.
Box with some light rubbing to extremities, and some smudges and light paint stains to the paper label on the front. Binding with minor rubbing to the top left corner. Box in very good, binding and interior in near fine condition overall. vg to near fine. Item #43985
