London: Taylor and Hessey, 1825. Hardcover. Duodecimo. (xv) 272pp. Textured dark brown leather boards with gilt ruling on the covers. Spine with gilt lettering on a black label, and gilt-stamped floral motifs. Brown speckled edges of book block. Gilt tooling along the edges of the covers. Engraved frontispiece. The work is a collection of writings from various respected and successful thinkers, men of letters, and statesmen, here presented as pieces of wisdom to the younger generation. These figures include Sir Isaac Newton, John Milton, John Locke, Sir Henry Sidney (Lord Deputy of Ireland) and the Earl of Chatham, among others. The front contains an engraved frontispiece by Henry Corbould. Inscriptions on the front free endpapers, seem to show that the book was passed down through the Elderton family, from at least 1827-1921. Binding with some rubbing along edges and to corners. Some cracking along the hinges of the spine. Scratches and light staining to the covers, with rubbing to the spine. Interior with inscription in ink. Water staining to the top edge of a few pages. Binding in good-, interior in very good- condition overall. g- to vg-. Item #43386
