London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1842. First edition. Softcover. Octavo. 57pp. (1). + 2 pages of publisher's ads. Printed tan wrappers, with black lettering on the front cover. Woodcut frontispiece. The publication is a report by the New Zealand Company on the conditions and the progress in the settlement of New Plymouth, released only one year after the first settlers arrived from the West Country of England. The report was compiled through official dispatches and private letters, many from Frederic Carrington (1807-1901), the principle surveyor for New Plymouth. Topics covered include, the geography, quality of the soil for agriculture, profitable exports, the native Maori population, arrival of the settlers, building of the community, and the climate. The publication includes a few tables and charts a well as a small botanical illustration. The final section contains the prospectus of the New Zealand Company. There is a blank sample form for purchasing land in the New Plymouth area, following the pagination. Two pages of publishers advertisements at the back discusses other publications pertaining to New Zealand emigration. Wrappers with light rubbing to extremities, a small closed tear at the bottom edge of the front cover and a small stain at the tail of the spine.
