1846-1882. The First Regiment of New York Volunteers Commanded by Col. Jonathan D. Stevenson in the Mexican War

New York: Geo S. Evans & Co., 1882. First edition. Hardcover. Small quarto. 94pp. Black pebbled cloth with gilt lettering and ruling on the front cover and spine. All edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Jonathan D. Stevenson, and an additional engraved portrait of the author. The publication documents the actions and members of the First Regiment of New York Volunteers during the Mexican American War (1846-1848) and their postwar lives, up until the time of the books publication.

The author, Francis D. Clark, who had been one of the members of the Regiment, begun research for the book 12 years earlier, in 1870. Through an extensive period of correspondence with other comrades from the regiment, personal interviews and governmental record from the War Department, Clark was able to compile this historical document. His work and publication was funded by moneys raised from fellow members of the regiment and in the intervening years Clark had published two brief updates to his work via pamphlets, one in 1871 and 1874. Over the years many of the members of the regiment had decided to stay in California, which coincidentally was in the beginning throws of the Gold Rush, while other had moved back to New York, or to other locations. A significant number of people had died, or their whereabouts were unknown. The author also documents anniversary reunions of the soldiers. The personnel statistics are organized into lists and charters by company and then by name.

Binding with some light rubbing to extremities. Some light closed tears and bumping to the head and tail of the spine. There is a smudge at the top right corner of the front cover.
