Catalog of an exhibition organized in collaboration of Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai (Society for International Cultural Relations), Tokyo, and the Verein für Deutsches Kunstgewerbe (Association for Applied Art in Germany), Berlin. Exhibition featuring basic Japanese commodities used in every day life of the time. The catalog design shows influence of both Bauhaus and Neue Sachlichkeit. With and introduction outlining the history and principles of traditional Japanese craftsmanship as well as the impact of Chinese and Western European influences. Selection of the 401 objects for the exhibition and design of catalog by Younosuke Natori. The catalog is divided into the categories wooden household utensils, tools, metal utensils, porcelain and stone ware, knives, brushes, paper, clothing, utensils for the tea ceremony, and varies other utensils. Profusely illustrated with b/w photographs of all 401 items. Contains descriptive listings of all objects with brief introduction to each category. Index with page reference of items at rear. Yonosuke Natori (1910–1962), a Japanese photographer and editor, went to Munich after graduation to study arts and crafts. He worked for the German publisher Ullstein starting in 1931 and attended the Olympic Games in Berlin, 1936. After that he moved to the US and became the first Japanese photographer to be contracted by Life Magazine. In 1947 he set up Shukan San Nyusu, a magazine inspired by Life Magazine.
