The meaning of its modern name Angkor Wat is "Temple City" in the Khmer language. Originally constructed as a Hindu temple in 1150 CE it was transformed into the Buddhist temple by the end of the century. It covers an area of some 400 acres with restoration efforts by a conglomerate of international agencies intensifying in the 20th Century to date. The restoration process has been an ongoing process since it's discovery by the French in the early 1800s.
