Born in Germany, Johannes Daniel Gros (1738-1812) was a pastor and professor of both German and moral philosophy at Columbia University. This work is the text version of a course he taught there, and is the “first treatise on Moral Philosophy written and published in America,” according to Sabin (Sabin 28933).

Tiny abrasion to leather on spine (not affecting title). Age-toning and smudges to title page. Dedication leaf misbound and placed between pp. viii and ix. Sporadic minor to moderate foxing throughout, except for pp. 301 to 304, which are heavily foxed. Ex-library stamp at verso of title page, at upper margin of the Introduction, and at lower margin of last leaf (not affecting lettering). Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in good to very good condition. g to vg. Item #42659
