The portrait photographs demonstrate various facial expressions which are arranged according to emotional states: malice, gentleness, disgust, desire, self-confidence, servility, joy, pain, tension of the soul (sleeping, musing, observing, tension, fear, stupidity, etc.) and tension of the senses (seeing, smelling, tasting and hearing).
Albert Borée (1864–1910) worked at the theaters in Plauen, Bromberg, Göttingen and Neu-Strelitz. From 1893 on he worked at the City Theater in Strasbourg as a character comic and as director. Illustrated with 119 halftone portrait photographs showing an actor posing with various expressions. A catalog of expressions at front is divided into the respective emotional states with detailed instructions as to the facial variations for each state.
