Publication to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of Buddha's Nirvana. The portfolio contains 32 plates with 36 tipped-on images of Gautama Buddha, seven in color, and 29 duotone images. Starting with a color reproduction of a silk-woven image of Gautama Buddha in the Northeast Museum, Shenyang, followed by eight duotone reproductions from Buddha's life, Ramoche Temple, Lhasa, Tibet, the portfolio continues with depictions of Buddha from various historic eras, the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Northern Chi dynasty, the Sui Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty, the Lao King Period, the Sung Dynasty, the Kin Dynasty, the Ming Dynasty, and the Ching Dynasty. The portfolio concludes with two color reproductions, one is a modern lacquer work representing Buddha, located in the Lyngyen Monastery, Soochow, and a modern mural painting of Buddha in Yung Ho Kung, Peking.
Text and captions in Chinese and English. Portfolio slightly rubbed and bumped at corners; small chips. Bottom panel broken at left and right border but attached to the back panel of portfolios. Small printed title label glued to spine with transparent tape. Ivory missing at one clasp. Inside cover with some foxing and library bookplate.
