The Theatre, In Its Influence Upon Literature, Morals, And Religion

Hartford: Canfield and Robins, 1837. First edition. Hardcover. Sextodecimo. 58pp. Original decorative, embossed cloth with gilt lettering on cover. Essay originally written preparatory to a debate upon the subject before "the Young Men's Society" in Detroit, Michigan. After the author's arrival in Hartford, a petition was presented to the House of Representatives for a repeal of the statute law prohibiting "theatrical and other amusements." The society of the South Baptist Church passed a vote to request a copy of the discourse for publication. When other people of the city joined in this request Turnball agreed to the publication hoping "that it may...be productive of good to the moral and religious interests of the community." Light wear along edges of cover and small chips at head and tail of spine. Light foxing of endpapers and a triangular 1 x 2" water stain in upper right corner of block throughout. Binding and interior in very good condition. vg. Item #39935
