London: Joseph John Leathwick, 1827. First edition. Hardcover. Duodecimo. xxxvii, 40-117 (1)pp. Original full blue morocco with gilt ruling on covers, gilt lettering and tooling on spine. Light brown endpapers. First edition of this translation by H. H. Young. Story of two biblical characters by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian who became a member of the Académie Francaise in 1788. The book contains a lengthy preface on the events that inspired this story. De Florian was well known for his fables which were well suited for young readers. His style is comparable to that of Swiss idealist Salomon Gessner with "all the artificial delicacy and sentimentality of the Gessnerian school." Very scarce. Some wear along edges of binding and spine, some chips, light scuffing and rubbed. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition. g to vg. Item #39726
