Black endpapers. Frontispiece photograph of the artist. Collection of Maruki's artwork, most of which has been exhibited publicly at one time or another in museums and galleries between 1935 and 1970. Maruki, best known for his "Hiroshima Panels," a collaboration with his wife Toshi, is considered a chiaroscrurist, an artist who uses strong contrast between light and dark (Chiaroscuro). The catalog is illustrated with seven beautiful color reproductions of Maruki's work, one of them two-sided, and 103 plates of b/w reproductions of his sensuous interpretations of nature. The plates 87 through 103 show excerpts of the "Hiroshima Panels," a series of fifteen painted folding panels, depicting the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This collaboration with his wife Toshi took 32 years to complete. Includes table of contents with listing of reproductions in English. Text in English and Japanese. Slipcase rubbed and slightly soiled with a couple of small abrasions from removed tape. Book block age-toned in margins not affecting images.
