The first draft of this one act comedy was written in 1768/69, the second draft in the summer of 1769. It premiered in 1777 with Goethe himself in the role of Alcest. Goethe kept revising the play until 1783. This if the first printing of the revised edition, published by Georg Joachim Göschen in 1787.
