Istanbul: Sunday Books, 2013. First edition. Softcover. Signed and dated by Lezmi on inside back cover, protected in modern mylar. 1/1000 Elephant Folio (21 3/4" x 16/5). 5 folded sheets. Original color photo-illustrated wrappers. Large tabloid-style publication depicting the protest of the Gezi Park movement at Taksim Square in Istanbul during May and June of 2013. The color photographs of the protest by Frederic Lezmi depict the tumultuous scenes of police and protesters, damaged property, graffiti, banners, camp sites, etc. The protest was aimed to stop the redevelopment of the adjoining park. Noam Chomsky called the protests "a beacon of hope and opportunity which deserve the strongest possible support...[and] it is part of an international uprising against the Neo-Liberal assault on the global population." Lezmi's 100 Polaroid-size photographs of the protest are mixed with a 10 full-page archival photographs of the famous square, taken from postcard images. The chosen large format of loose oversized pages, similar to typical daily newspapers, should be understood as a critique of the Turkish newspapers who all but ignored the protests. The publication was given away to the protesters by the photographer. Only 100 copies were reserved for the trade. Lezmi is an Istanbul based photographer and book designer with German and Lebanese background. Taksim Calling was picked by EMAHO Magazine among "The Most Interesting Photobooks of 2013" and exhibited in Martin Parr’s exhibition of ‘Protest Books’ in Paris. New. Fine. Item #37570
