Original half calf over marbled boards with gilt ruling and lettering on spine. Engraved frontispiece missing. This extraordinary and only edition of the woordenboek (encyclopedia), still valued for its lexicographical and linguistic content, took Buys 13 years to complete in 1778. Major work of the Dutch linguist profusely illustrated with engravings of a myriad of subjects and a large size folding chart (19" x 14") Arbor Scientiae Ex Objectis Desumpta (Distribution of Knowledge According to Its Objects). Buys started his career as the author of De Algemeene Spectator in 1749 and is known for the publication of an improved edition of the English-Dutch dictionary (1766) originally compiled by William Sewel, and a 2 volume dictionary of terms of art (1768). Text in Dutch. Bindings rubbed with some scuffing and wear along edges. Some damp-staining and water stains of block, occasionally covering some 20-30 pages and a few images. Extensive handwritten notes in margins and newspaper clippings and penciled and inked notes laid in or glued to pages. Some tears and creasing in block.
