Posthumous works of Polish physicist Marjan Smoluchowski (1872-1917), famous for having considerably generalized and extended the theory of Brownian motion. Connecting the problem of Maxwell’s Demon with that of Brownian motion, he wrote that in order to violate the second principle of thermodynamics, the Demon had to be “taught” (in German “unterrichtet”) regarding the speed of molecules. Sporadic and minor creasing and closed tears along edges of wrappers. Pages slightly age-toned throughout. Text in French, German, English and Polish.
