Ulfert Wilke (1907-1987), born in Bavaria, Germany, was an internationally recognized painter, calligrapher, museum director and art collector. He was also the founding and acting director of the University of lowa Museum of Arts from 1968 to 1978. Wilke is best known for his abstract painting and calligraphic creations connected to the abstract expressionism movement.
