Dr. Bruno Bettelheim was one of the main proponents of Freudian theory as applied to child development in the United States during the later part of the 20th century. This book is in fact dedicated to the memory of Sigmund Freud. He was particularly well known for his argument that autism was caused by unaffectionate parenting particularly on the part of the mother. In this book Bettelheim argued that circumcision came from male envy of female reproductive power and served as a symbolic form of castration.
