Ein manichäisches Bet- und Beichtbuch

Berlin: Verlag der Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1937. First edition. Softcover. Quarto. 143 (1)pp. Original orange wrappers with black lettering on cover and spine. Among the many handwritten Iranian-Manichaeian documents brought back to Berlin from the Turfan expeditions (China) only one book was bound and is presented to the public here. This book contains a number of Persian and Parthian hymns and as the main piece a confessional which was noted by W. Lentz and F. W. K. Müller in previous works. It is clear that the order of the pages in this book is random. The simple binding is considered contemporary (middle ages) but not original. Though obviously not in the original order it was possible to restore the order to a certain extent. In this 1937 work W. Henning attempts to substantiate his interpretation of the order of what he considers must have been the original. Text in German. Front wrapper heavily chipped and separated. Spine heavily chipped. Back wrapper missing. Penciled numbers on title page. Book block age-toned. Wrappers in overall poor, interior in good condition. fair. Item #36020
