In the last years of his life, Schechter left Cambridge University for the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, bringing with him much of the ongoing project of deciphering the Genizah texts. Vol. 1 contains the commentary of Saadiah Gaon on Genesis, parts of Midrash Tanumah and the Mikhiltah of R. Simeon. Vol. 2 offers a collection of geonic and early Karaite texts. Includes responsa from R. Amram Gaon, R. Hai Gaon and R. Sherira Gaon. There are also fragments from a Karaite prayer book. Vol. III is a collection liturgical and secular poetry. These texts form the essential foundation for the modern scholarly understanding of Jewish life in the Near East from the 10th-13th centuries. The volumes were edited by two of the luminary scholars at the Jewish Theological Seminary in the early 20th century Louis Ginzberg and Israel Davidson. This work was later reprinted in 1969.
