Extensive work of the German historian and director of the Geographical Art School in Potsdam cataloging the peoples of the world according to ancestry, relation and features in government, religion, customs and traditional costumes. Richly illustrated with 150 exquisite hand colored plates. An early ethnographical study and categorization including Asia, North- and South-America, Malaysia, Australia, South Asia, Ethiopia, Caucasus, and Indo-European people. Text in German, Gothic script. Binding is rubbed and bumped at corners. Gilt stamped illustration somewhat faded on vol. 2 and spine of vol. 1. Minor tear at middle of front hinge of vol. 1. The publication is misbound by publisher as follows: Vol. 1 - pages 17-32 missing including image of plate 2; pages 33-48 are duplicated including images of plates 3 and 4. The order of plates 30 and 31 and 58 and 59 is reversed. Plate 33, indicated to follow page 282 is placed after page 244 and plates 48 and 49 appear after pages 430, respectively 431 instead of pages 417 and 418. Signature starting at page 13 is lose. Vol. 2: Plate 83 in vol. 2 is missing and plate 84 lose. Image of plate 62 is "adorned" with a few pencil marks. Plates 22, 23, and 24 a bound in 2 pages later than indicated in listing of plates. There are few slightly artistic pencil marks and drawings in the margins of a few pages. Volume 1 with lighter foxing mostly in the first third of the book, volume two with heavy foxing throughout not affecting images. Binding in overall good, interior in good- condition. g. Item #35099
