Masterpieces from the Musée du Quai Branly Collections

Paris: Musée du Quai Branly, 2006. First edition. Softcover. Folio. 113, [3]pp. Original photo-illustrated wrappers. This remarkable book presents samples from the permanent collections and invites you to take an aesthetic promenade around the art of Africa, Oceania, Asia and the Americas. The exhibits (about 80 masterpieces) have mostly been sourced from the musée de l’Homme and the Musée National des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie. Many more recent acquisitions, along with gifts, have also been included in this selection of key artworks, which exemplify a wealth of diverse plastic forms. Every typology is represented here: sculptures, masks, textiles, musical instruments as well as ritual and common artefacts. Each page is enhanced with clear and concise observations, that invite the reader to discover a cornucopia of emblematic artworks: the Hei-tiki pendent (Maori), the mask in the shape of a hare (Dogon), the pair of twin ibeji (Yoruba), the Shaman’s costume (Évenk) and the robe for the ‘bison dance’ (Mississippi River Valley). Written by the Quai Branly Museum team with an introduction by Stéphane Martin and Germain Viatte. Previous owner's inscription on upper half-title. Previous owner's blind stamp on lower margin of half-title (Norman Hurst). Upper corners creased, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Wrappers and interior in overall good condition. g.
