Die neue Linie. August 1936, Olympia. [Special Berlin Olympics issue. Heft 12, VII. Jahrgang]

Leipzig: Otto Bayer, 1936. First edition. Softcover. Folio. 87, [1]pp. Original color wrappers splendidly illustrated by H. F and Hein Neuner. Published in Germany between 1929 and 1943, Die neue Linie (“The New Line”) was an outstanding new lifestyle magazine on art, architecture, and fashion. No other publication of this era was so consistent in bringing avant-garde typographic ideas to a mass audience, as leading graphic designers from the Bauhaus, including László Moholy-Nagy, Umbo and Herbert Bayer, steered the look of the magazine, whose contents combined fashion, literature, graphic design and art. Unembellished fonts, dynamic diagonals and dramatic use of photomontage were key to the journal's striking appearance. Its authors included Walter Gropius, Aldous Huxley, Gottfried Benn and Thomas Mann; even the advertising pages, designed by Bauhaus veterans Herbert Bayer and Kurt Kranz, were always attractively composed. Despite widespread media conformity during the Nazi era, Die Neue Linie was largely spared the regime's sanctions. This exceptional issue is mainly dedicated to the Berlin Olympic Games, and features a lenghty article on the art at the Olympic stadium, and others relative to the historical sportive event. This magazine is superbly illustrated throughout with numerous b/w photographic reproductions as well as color illustrations. Some rubbing and moderate creasing along edges of wrappers. Closed tears at tail of spine. Text in German, with some captions in English and French. Wrappers in overall good-, interior in very good condition. g. Item #34272
