Stuttgart: W. Spemann; Union Deutsche Verlagsgesellschaft, 1881-1892. First edition. Hardcover. Quarto. XVI, 506, [2], VIII, 563, [1]pp. 3/4 morocco over burgundy cloth with gold lettering on spine. Hans Vaihinger published this commentary on Kant’s Kritik der reinen Vernunft (Critique of Pure Reason) in honor of its centennial anniversary. Indeed, the year 1881 saw the appearance of the first volume of Vaihinger’s massive commentary. On the basis of this work Vaihinger was called to Halle as Extraordinarius in 1884. He had hoped that the second volume would appear shortly; however, lecture preparations demanded far more time than he had initially thought. This, coupled with poor health and failing sight, continued to delay work on the second volume. He finally completed it and it appeared in 1892. Vaihinger’s commentary was his first major contribution to the back to Kant movement. Binding heavily rubbed on spine and along edges, with abrasion to leather. Previous owner's name on free front endpaper. Upper corner of pages in first volume partly bumped. Text in German. Binding in overall poor to fair, interior in good+ to very good condition. g.
