VI, [7]-329, [1], [6]pp (advertisement), V, 6-370pp. Original decorated, dark brown cloth with gold lettering on spines and blind embossing to the boards (with the 20 embossed dots on each board.) "Dred" is the second novel from Harriet Beecher Stowe. First published in two volumes by Phillips, Sampson and Company in 1856, this work tells the story of Nina Gordon, an impetuous young heiress to a large southern plantation, whose land is rapidly becoming worthless. It is run competently by one of Nina's slaves, Harry, who endures a murderous rivalry with Nina's brother Tom Gordon, a drunken, cruel slaveowner. Both volumes are first state copies with the correct point on page 88 of volume I, no batter on page 209 and line 9 from the bottom on page 370 with "the Dicksons are fewer." Both volumes are in binding "A" per BAL 19389 with light yellow end papers. Edges and corners rubbed. Head and tail of spines slightly chipped. Previous owner's ex-libris on inside of each front cover (Cecil Billington.) Offsetting on endpapers. Sporadic foxing and age-toning throughout. Pp. 195-206 of first volume partly disbound. Bindings in overall fair to good-, interior in good- to good condition. fair. Item #33734
