Title-pages in red and black lettering. Decorative initials. A 12-volume collection of Eugene Field's poetical work. Eugene Field (1850-1895) started to work as a journalist for the St. Joseph Gazette in Saint Joseph, Missouri, in 1875. He became known for his light, humorous articles written in a gossipy style, some of which were reprinted by other newspapers around the country. It was during this time that he wrote the famous poem "Lovers Lane" about a street in St. Joseph, Missouri. Field first started publishing poetry in 1879, when his poem "Christmas Treasures" appeared in "A Little Book of Western Verse." Over a dozen volumes of poetry followed and he became well known for his light-hearted poems for children, among the most famous of which are "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod" and "The Duel" (which is perhaps better known as "The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat"). Field also published a number of short stories, including "The Holy Cross" and "Daniel and the Devil." He died in Chicago of a heart attack at the age of 45. This set is complete with its several fold-out facsimile plates.

* Walter Haas was a Los Angeles Attorney-at-Law in the 1880's. In 1891 he was admitted to the Supreme Court of California. The following year he was appointed to the United States District Court, United States Circuit, and United States Circuit Court of Appeals. He also belonged to the Palestine Lodge No. 351, the Union League Club, L.A. Chamber of Commerce, and other clubs and associations.
