München: Hugo Schmidt, 1921. Limited edition. Hardcover. 1/500. Quarto. XIII, [7], 170, [6], 148, [2]pp. Original 3/4 vellum over decorative cloth, with gold lettering on spine. Top edge gilt. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Rembrandt protected with a tissue guard. Rembrandt's Bible is the complete King James Bible with 240 illustrations and 20 original etchings after Rembrandt all protected with tissue guards. It is remarkable that though many Christian painters throughout the ages had been inspired by the Bible with its wealth of subjects and scenes, comparatively few had given us a complete cycle of Bible pictures comprising both the Old and New Testaments. One of these few artists was Rembrandt who, to judge from the multiplicity and variety of his biblical pictures and designs, must have been a close student of the Bible and imbued with an intense religious feeling. Indeed, he may be counted among the most prolific and ingenious of Bible illustrators, for he is credited with more than 200 paintings and etchings and over 500 rough sketches dealing with biblical subjects. Slight soiling/age-toning on vellum. Text in German. Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition. vg. Item #29534
