Cologne: Pierre du Marteau, 1665. Second edition. Hardcover. 16mo. 501, [1], 493, [1], 518pp. Original full calf with gold lettering and tooling on spines. Raised bands. Printer's device on each title page. Decorative headpieces and initials. 3-volume set printed at Leyden by the heirs and the widow of Jean Elzevier. This second edition of the famed French Field-Marshal memoirs was published the same year than the original edition. A great favourite of King Henri IV, de Bassompierre proved himself during the war against the Turks (1603), and during the Huguenot rising of 1621-22, which won him the promotion to the rank of marshal of France. His "Mémoires" are an important source for the history of his time. Age wear on binding with heavy rubbing on spines and along edges. Head and tail of spines chipped. Armorial bookplate of “Henricus Liber Baro de Gudenus” on each front pastedown. Contemporary previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper of third volume (Melle de Brabant). Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Text in French. Binding in fair, interior in overall very good condition. g. Item #29270
