Octavo. vii,687pp. iv,726pp. Three-quarter gold-tooled leather over patterned gray cloth with gold decorated spine. Frontispiece in both volumes. From title-page: "The Divine Legation of Moses by the Right Reverend William Warburton, D. D., Lord Bishop of Gloucester. To which is prefixed, an account of the life, writings, and character of the author, by Richard Hurd, D. D., Lord Bishop of Worcester." The Divine Legation of Moses by English critic and churchman, William Warburton (1698-1779) was one of the most daring and ingenious works of theological paradoxes. The deists had made the absence of any inculcation of the doctrine of a future life an objection to the divine authority of the Mosaic writings. Warburton boldly admitted the fact and turned it against the adversary by maintaining that no merely human legislator would have omitted such a sanction of morality. Not surprisingly, the book caused much controversy. Heavy age wear on bindings. Parts of backstrip in Vol. I missing. Boards in Vol. I. held in place with clear tape across spine, front board of Vol. II held in place by gray binders tape along joint. Library bookplate on inside of front board, library stamp on free front flyleaf and title-page. Sporadic foxing and rippling on leaves throughout. Annotations and markings in black pen to some pages in Vol. I. Two small number stickers on spines. Bindings in poor, interior in overall good+ condition. Scarce 1837 new edition. fair. Item #27834
