Fascinating work in which the author describes the manners and customs of the people of New Britain (Bismarck Archipel), and more particularly of the Duke of York group. In describing Polynesians, Brown's remarks apply to the Samoans, except when otherwise stated. This study is profusely illustrated with numerous full-page b/w photographic reproductions. Some rubbing along joints and edges of binding, and minor staining on spine and covers. Upper front corner and lower back corner bumped (not affecting pages). Previous owner's bookplate on inside of front board. Previous owner's blind stamp on margin of each plate (not affecting illustrations), half-title and title-page.
