This poem in elegiac metre was written by Goethe in 1796. In it, the Greek youth Alexis, just before his departure by ship, falls deeply in love with Dora. The 158-line poem is a monologue spoken aboard the ship by Alexis shortly after his departure from her. German writers such as Friedrich von Schiller praised it and it is still seen as one of the purest of Goethe's classicism. Illustrated with 16 color lithographs by Günter Horlbeck.
