Oriental Institute Publications, Volume LXXIV: Reliefs and inscriptions at Karnak. Vol. III: The Bubastite portal by the Epigraphic Survey, represented by George R. Hughes, field director

Chicago: The University of Chicago, 1954. First edition. Hardcover. Elephant folio. XIVpp, 1 figure, 22 loose plates, as issued. Original cloth over printed paper covered boards portfolio, with black string. Scarce and fascinating work on the Bubastite Portal being the south entrance to the great First Court of the Temple of Amun at Karnak. It was architecturally conceived as a uniform part of the wall and colonnade surrounding the court. Had it not been for the presence of the temple of Ramses III in the way, this entrance would probably have been placed directly opposite the north entrance at a point almost exactly in the middle of the Ramses temple. Under the circumstances it was built to occupy the space between the Second Pylon and the Ramses temple, and became somewhat more elaborate than the north entrance by the necessary addition of a pilaster against each of the earlier structures. This work is profusely illustrated with a figure depicting the plan of Bubastite Portal showing location of plates, and 22 plates of photographic reproductions of views and hieroglyphic inscriptions. Very minor soiling and scuffing on covers and along joints. Previous owner's stamp on inside of front board. Upper left corner of half-title page slightly soiled. Slight folding mark at center of text pages. Portfolio in overall good+, interior in very good condition. g. Item #25546
