The Disputation

Salford: Scholarly Publications, 1972. First edition. Hardcover. Quarto. XVI, 332pp. Original illustrated wrappers over red cloth, with gold lettering on front cover and spine. Blind-stamped borders and decoration on front board. In the Middle Ages, Jews were often compelled by the Church to engage in religious disputes. In 1263 Moses ben Nachman, the leading Rabbi of his time, was summoned for this purpose before Jayme I of Aragon. He defended himself so well that the king dismissed him with a gift of 300 maravedis. In this work, the author assumes his mantle and the counter attack is projected into the present. Minor creasing along edges of wrappers. This work contains 5 b/w photographic reproductions of the Holy Shroud of Christ. Wrappers in overall very good, binding and interior in near to fine condition. vg. Item #25266
