Les Ouvriers d'une Vigne Stérile. Les Jésuites et la conversion des Indiens au Brésil 1580-1620.

Paris: Centre Culturelle, 2000. Softcover. Quarto. 557, [3]pp. Original pictorial wrappers with red and black lettering on front cover and spine. Printer's device on title-page. Charlotte de Castenau's monograph examines the ways in which Jesuit missionaries transformed and adapted their project to the particular context of Brazil. By the 1580's this context had proven to be so resistant to their original missionary goals that the Jesuits themselves called it a sterile vineyard, a field in which they labored with little hope of reward, and to the detriment of their own souls. This work is profusely illustrated with 18 b/w and color photographic reproductions of documents and numerous folding charts. Minor soiling on covers. Wrappers in overall good to very good, interior in very good condition. g. Item #25219
