From title-page: "Hebrew, Latin, and English Dictionary; containing, all the Hebrew and Chaldee words used in the Old Testament, including the proper names, arranged under one alphabet, the derivatives referred to their respective roots, and the signification, in Latin and English, according to the best authorities: with copius vocabularies, Latin and Hebrew, and English and Hebrew." Important dictionary by German-born clergyman Joseph Samuel Christian Frederick Frey (1773-1850). In 1798 Frey converted from Judaism to Christianity and devoted the rest of his life trying to convert Jews to that religion. In 1816 he emigrated to America, where four years later he founded the American Society for meliorating the condition of the Jews. The enterprise proved a failure and in 1827 Frey left the Congregational Church to become a Baptist. Later in his life he settled in Pontiac, Michigan, where he taught Hebrew at the State University. Age wear, staining and scuffing on binding. Small closed tear on head of spine, some fraying on bottom edge. Hinges starting. Front- and rear free endpaper crudely attached to inside of covers with white binders tape. Rippling to pages. Waterstaining to first, and last few leaves, otherwise interior in good condition, binding fair. As is. fair. Item #23765
