Hölderin Jahrbuch im Auftrag der Friedrich-Hölderlin-Gesellschaft (10 volumes)

Tübingen: J.C.B. Mohr (Paul Siebeck), n/d. Softcover. 8vo. Original printed wraps. Name of previous owner 'Edgar Salin' written in black ink on title-pages. Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843) was a major German lyric poet whose works bridged the Classical and Romantic schools. 10 volumes (* numbers & years below) of the Hölderlin Jahrbuch by the Hölderlin Gesellschaft (Society). The Society was founded on 7 June, 1943. First published in 1944 and continued until 2005. Each volume entails articles and essays by various writers related to the life and work of Friedrich Hölderlin. The poetry of Hölderlin, widely recognized today as one of the highest points of German literature, was little known or understood during his lifetime and slipped into obscurity shortly after his death; his mental illness and reclusion made him fade from his contemporaries' consciousness. Even though some of his works were being published during his lifetime, it was largely ignored for the rest of the 19th century. One volume with few fold-out facsimile letters, three other volumes with b/w reproductions of photographs. Some age toning, minor staining and creasing on some volumes. Spine on 1947 volume creased with 1/2" tear on tail of spine. Tight copies in overall very good condition. Extra shipping required. vg. Item #22913
