Sem' Khorov (a capella) dlia smeshannykh golosov [Seven Choirs for mixed voices], Op 28. Book 2 of 3

St. Petersburg: V. Bessel and Co., 1897. Reprint. Softcover. 4to. 17pp. White wrappers with b&w writing and steel plate engraving. Reprint of the original edition published in 1885. One volume of a 3-volume set of sheet music, Includes Choirs No. 4 "Niebo i Zvezdy" ["Sky and Stars"] and No. 5 "Noch' na Beregu Moria" ["Night on the Seashore"], from Tzezar' Antonovich Kiui (Cesar Cui), important 19th century Russian composer and a member of the Mighty Handful (The Five, which was founded by Balakirev and also included Rimsky Korsakov, Borodin, and Mussorgsky). The score includes 4 vocal lines- Soprano, Alto, Tenor (notated in treble clef), and Bass, as well as a piano part (despite the "a capella" on the title page). In addition to his illustrious career as a general and a military instructor who counted Nicholas II among his students, Cesar Cui was also an important 19th century Russian composer and critic. A member of Balakirev's Mighty Handful movement to create a genuine Russian musical style, Cui strove to incorporate traditional Russian melodies and lyrics into his compositions. The two choirs of Op. 28 reflect this, particularly with lyrics- the words of Choir No. 4 are a poem by Lermontov, while No. 5's text is by Nikitin (both are important 19th century Russian Romantic poets). Light chipping along spine, ink library stamps on front wrapper and throughout interior. Overall in very good condition. vg. Item #22833
