Dr. Carl Diem (1882-1962) was a German sports administrator, and as Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of the Berlin Olympic Games, the chief organizer of the 1936 Olympic Summer Games. He revived the ancient Olympic tradition of the torch relay for the 1936 games and was a remarkable scholar who became the author of several monographs on sport history.
