Raised bands. Top edge gilt. Deckled fore and bottom page edges. Decorative endpapers. James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was an American-born, British-based artist. Whistler titled many of his paintings "arrangements", "harmonies", and "nocturnes", emphasizing the primacy of tonal harmony. He influenced the art world and the broader culture of his time with his artistic theories and his friendships with leading artists and writers. Delightfully illustrated with 96 full-page reproductions of etchings, some in heliogravure. Each plate is protected by a captioned tissue guard. Ex-libris of Vyvyan Edwards on inside of front board. Age wear, scuffing and staining on binding. Front board slightly bowed. Foxing on half-title page. Minor soiling to margin of some plates. Edited by Geoffrey Holme.
