Whistler titled many of his paintings "arrangements", "harmonies", and "nocturnes", emphasizing the primacy of tonal harmony. He influenced the art world and the broader culture of his time with his artistic theories and his friendships with leading artists and writers. Delightfully illustrated with 96 full-page reproductions of etchings, some in heliogravure. Each plate is protected by a captioned tissue guard. Ex-libris of Vyvyan Edwards on inside of front board.
