Verther's Leiden fun Yohan Volfgang Gethe; iberzetst un ayngeleytet fun S. Yudson [RARE]

New York: Mehr Likht, 1910. First edition. Softcover. 8vo. 190 pp. Original paper wrappers. Book is very rare, as OCLC only lists three libraries world wide that own this work. Frontis piece portraying a b/w steel engraving portrait of Goethe mounted on front endpaper. Lovely decorative title page. This is an interesting work, which is a Yiddish translation of "Werther's Suffering and Suicide," Goethe's famous first novel, that tells the story of a young man's severe psychological pain from which he finds relief only by ending his life with a gun. The author asked his readers to respond with empathy to his protagonist's ordeal and thereby assumes a stance, which not only mirrors a fundamental principle of psychological inquiry, but which also helps the reader gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of human self destruction. Age wear to wrappers; chipping to outer edges. Asmall closed tear on foot of spine. Another small tear on head of spine. Hinges starting. Mounted Frontis piece has become detached, but is present and pristine. Exterior in good, interior in good - very good condition. g. Item #19721
