"This book is not intended to be a chronicle of military exactitudes; it was written in moments of leisure in 1922, when I was stationed in the Perisan Gulf, at Muscat, and is primarily a narrative of impressions and reminiscences from the point of view of a regimental officer." (statement by author on page before table of contents.) "As the author frankly states in his prefatory note, this book . . . is a record of the personal experiences of a young officer in Macedonia and Judæ in the anxious years of 1916-17." (from foreword).
