Zalmen Zylbercweig a.k.a. Zilbertsvayg (1894-1972) was born in Chortkov, Galicia. He started his career as an actor before he turned to writing, translating, and directing plays. Zylbercweig was a historian of the Yiddish Theater.  His best known work was his Leksikon fun yidishn teater (Lexicon of the Yiddish Theatre), a six volume reference work in Yiddish on the lives of those who were involved in professional Yiddish Theater anywhere in the world. Zylbercweig relocated to New York in 1937 where he served as editor for the Jewish American for eleven years. He later moved to Los Angeles.
