The Rubaiyat was written in the late 11th and early 12th centuries by the Persian astronomer-poet, Omar Khayyam. The verses were translated into English for the first time in 1858 by the English poet, Edward Fitzgerald, and Vedder's drawings were created for the edition published by Houghton, Mifflin & Co. in 1884.
