This work is a poetic saga set in Poland. It tells the story of a family which, for several generations, has stood for progress within the Jewish community. The family's last descendant, Meir Ezofowicz, a young man, revolts against the obscurantism of his milieu, and the forces of doctrinal darkness by the Sephardic rebbe Nehemiah Todros. This novel is exquisitely illustrated with 26 b/w full-page photomechanical reproductions after steel-plate engravings by Polish artist Elwiro Michal Andriolli describing scenes from all aspects of daily Jewish life. Text in German, Gothic script. Light wear along edges of binding with very light fraying at head of spine lightly rubbed. Illustrated lithographic bookplate on inside front cover. Half-title, title page with light medium foxing diminishing and in margins for a few pages at front and back, not affecting plates with images. Block with age-toning, mostly along edges. Very good condition. Item #53196
