Red spekled edges of book block. Engraved frontispeice. This work serves and Irish-born writer John Corry's satirical appraisal of London, and paints a vivid portrait of the metropolis at the time, in all of its, social, commercial and physical aspects. This copy is from the personal library of Anglo-Jewish historian, writer, and art collector Alfred Rubens (1903-1998), containing his illustrated bookplate, and his pencil notes relating to Jewish subject matter in this book (on the front free endpaper).

Included are discussions of quite a wide range of subjects, including various institutions, individual personalities, business and retail establishments, and various ethnic and immigrant groups resident in the city (including Jews, who are protrayed in a rather negative light overall). In a later chapter the author takes aim at a quack doctors, a favorite target of his ridicule and subject about which the author wrote an entire previous book. The writer at times take an often satirical and sarcastic tone when discussing the mores, social trends and British manners of the day. Also examined are efforts during the period to advocate for the equality of women. The work also serves at times as something of a guide for travelers and new arrivals in the city. Page 11 contains a table of population statistics.

Leather sections of binding rubbed, including along the spine. Top of the front hinge of the spine lightly cracking, with head of spine lightly chipped. Interior with a small stain along the gutter of the title page. Inteiror extremely clean with book block tight. Binding in good, interior in very good+ condition overall. g to vg+. Item #52781
