Dr. J. Jay Villers in His Three New Humous Entertainments [CARTE DE VISITE]

NP [New York?]: [ca.1874]. Card. 2.5x4". This card de visite promotes the performances of American humorist Dr. J. Jay Villers (Joseph Jay Villers, 1836-1912). The front of the cards contains a striking albumen photograph showing of Villers' photo-portrait in the center surrounded by a photo-collage of smaller images of him pulling 16 different character expressions, with text at the bottom. The verso contains printed text describing Viller's performances and local New York reviews of the shows. These performances, are described as "lectures" being comprised of four subjects: "Funny People We Know", "Humorists of the Past and Present", "Eccentric Character", and "Mirth and Mimicry". During the 1870s and 1880s Villers, a former Brooklyn dentist, embarked on a career touring the Northeast and Midwestern United States as an elocutionist, humorist and ventriloquist, best known for his comedic impressions of famous figures and recitations of literature. He was most noted for his impressions of Mark Twain, to whom he bore a passing resemblance, and recitations of his work. Viller's was among the most noted impersonators of Twain in the late 19th century*. Card with some minor rubbing and creasing to the edges. In very good condition overall. * In 1874 Villers produced a humor anthology titled "Laghing Gas: A repository of Fun, Wit and Humor" (New York : J.S. Ogilvie & Company), which included writings by Mark Twain.
