"This book tramples out the vintage of facts whence came John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath." It tells the bitter truth about a form of fascism that is operating in California to-day, where brown-shirted vigilantes ride herd on 145,000 unfortunates in 3500 labor camps. Because of Mr. McWilliams's reputation as an expert on this subject Governor Olson, early in 1939, appointed him Commissioner of Immigration and Housing in the California State Government. Mr. Williams's book lays bare the reasons for present conditions and explains in detail, and illustrates with examples from the history of California's land policy, how its rich acreage happens to be held so closely by so few owners. He shows how the huge feudal empires of the Mexican grandees were transferred almost intact to American owners and American speculators when California was annexed by the United States. He shows the division methods by which great railway land grants were acquired by individual owners, and how a misguided land policy in California aided and abetted this concentration of land ownership." (Publisher).
